Montclair (#10) appears to be the most likely winner of this race after being unable to close into a slow pace last time. He has plenty of prior efforts that would make him awfully tough for these to handle, and just needs a fair pace to close into. OI prefer him to Munjaz (#1), who has faced tougher fields than the one he meets today but is unproven at this distance. Closing Bell (#6) is also likely to take some money, but he’s been a disappointment since returning as a five-year-old.
I could use any of the aforementioned runners, but I want to take a shot with a new face. ALTAR BOY (#2) is coming into this race in very good form. His last effort, in which he got left at the start and encountered traffic in the stretch, was much better than it seems. This is an interesting spot for Mike Maker to choose given that this runner has been primarily a sprinter/miler throughout his career. On the other hand, Maker does have outstanding numbers in these types of races. According to DRF Formulator, over the past five years, he is 11 for 41 with a $3.16 ROI with all turf runners going 10 furlongs or farther at NYRA. I’m hoping that Luis Saez can get Altar Boy to break alertly today and attain a position towards the front of the pack, so that he can use his speed to sprint away when the real running begins.
