Belmont Sunday Highlight Horse: Blinker-less Blacktype can outfinish his rivals in absurdly tough allowance race

>>Belmont | Race 8 | Sunday July 3 | Post Time 5:13 EDT | Go To The TimeformUS PPs

This race could easily be a Grade 3 stakes. There are just so many talented runners signed on to participate.

Almasty (#8) has to be considered one of the top contenders after his encouraging return effort last time. He’s a bit better going a mile, but he handled the seven furlongs last time while only losing to a very talented runner in Full Mast. He’s proven capable of rating, which should serve him well as he faces off against the speedy Macagone.

Macagone (#1) set a very fast pace in the Kingston last time, which should have set things up for Kharafa, who failed to capitalize. Macagone is a horse that seems to relax around two turns, but can be difficult to rate at times and has not had as much success in one-turn races at Belmont.

We felt that Kharafa (#5) should have been second in the Kingston last time after working out such a great trip. The winner was the beneficiary of a very fast pace, but Kharafa couldn’t even outrun his rival King Kreesa, who had been chasing that pace early. We wonder if he’s losing a step at age seven.

Our top pick is BLACKTYPE (#3).

He’s coming out of a similarly deep allowance race, and he ran well that day despite getting rank under Irad Ortiz down the backstretch and around the turn. He’s been a little keen in his recent starts, so it’s probably a good move by Christophe Clement to take the blinkers off. This one-mile distance should be perfect for him, since it will allow him to settle farther back in the pack and get the cover that he needs.
At a huge price, we also could throw in High Noon Rider (#11). He has been a little inconsistent over the course of his career, but he has run some of his best races at a mile. He was part of a pace that collapsed in his 2015 finale, and has earned speed figures that put him in the mix.
