Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around. >>See related interview on betting longshots.
Zim N the Mailman:
12-1 on ML:
Was very impressive in victory in a dirt route three weeks ago. Son of Unusual Heat has old grass races that earned higher speed figures than the surrounding races. Draws a good post for his first try down the hill and should be a big price.
15-1 on ML:
Both of his grass tries were much, much better than they looked because he was fried on extreme paces. Pace Projector has him on the early lead again today, but it is projecting a soft pace. Goes second off the layoff after a tricky inside trip at Los Al.
6-1 on ML:
Caught wide on a very fast pace three weeks ago. Held together pretty well and earned a speed figure of 99—the best in today’s field. Draws inside and is perfectly capable of rating off the pace.
6-1 on ML (see full-length Gamely write-up).
8-1 on ML:
Reclaimed (from Mullins) by a trainer who rarely wins. That should help the price. Up in class and races at his best distance. Training well by some accounts and looks the type to make a late run into exotics.
20-1 on ML:
Has lifted nary a foot in two starts. Was not handled particularly aggressively last time. We think there is slightly more horse here than we have seen to date. Would not exclude from supers if his price is gigantic.
