Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around. >>See related interview on betting longshots.
Last One Standing:
7-2 on ML:
Shortens up again and might make the early lead against these. Raced on the worst part of the racetrack during the first part of his Los Al race.
6-1 on ML:
Comes in off 870-yard race and goes 2nd off the layoff for a sharp trainer. Should be able to clear off early against these. Has run well in the big leagues before. Might prove difficult to run down at a price.
9-2 on ML:
Goes first off the claim for a trainer who knows what he’s doing but rarely claims. Fits at this level and gets an interesting rider switch.
5-1 on ML:
She did not run at all poorly down the hill a couple months ago. She was up against a soft pace and she finished with too much gas in the tank. Came back to run big on wet dirt. Back on the hill today, and the two scratches should soften things up on the front end.
