On The Contrary: Santa Anita’s Most Playable Longshots on Thursday

>>Thursday May 26th | Go To TFUS PPs for today’s races at Santa Anita

Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around. >>See related interview on betting longshots.

Race 4:

Black Tie:

6-1 on ML:

Spent too much time on a dull rail at Los Al. Managed to grind his way into second against cheaper. In light again today. Draws well with a hustling rider. Has some back figures that are not all that out of place in here.

6-1 on ML:

Exits the same race as Black Tie: a race in which Atascaderan fired a huge shot to get the win, and along the way stayed well off the rail on the backstretch. Berlusconi accordingly pushed through toward the inside and ran a very game race, grinding all the way to the line. He goes 3rd off the layoff today and can get involved in exotics if Pedroza (who rides him well) gets him a trip.

Race 5:

4-1 on ML:

Broke her maiden, at long last, on dirt, but we mildly prefer her on grass. The hope here is that Lob City will fire out of the gate, sucking the others along and thereby giving Entebbe the pace she needs to make the last run.

Race 8:

The Natural:

10-1 on ML.

Wide into a fast pace at Los Al. Cuts back for this, has a decent speed figure two back, and has a chance to make a late run into exotics at a big number.
