Only favorite Ginned Up (#4) brings positive recent turf experience to the table. While she put in decent efforts in her two grass starts down at Gulfstream, she wasn’t facing the strongest fields of maidens that were assembled down there. We would not be surprised if she turns out to be an underlay in this spot.
There are two interesting first-time turf runners. The shorter-priced alternative, Votre Coeur (#6), has shown a hint of ability in two dirt starts, and has some pedigree for grass in her second family. However, progeny of Flatter are not known for their prowess on turf.
We instead prefer NOLO CONTENDERE (#2).
She has plenty of turf influences on both sides of her pedigree, by excellent turf influence Scatt Daddy, out of a dam that found most of her success on turf. There’s also plenty of turf breeding in her second female generation, stemming from her granddam Plenty of Grace. Nolo Contendere has yet to show much in three dirt starts, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see her take a huge step forward with this surface switch. Her early speed also should give her an advantage in a race lacking confirmed place players. Rick Violette gets a very good 92 trainer rating with horses making their third starts back from a layoff.
