On The Contrary: Santa Anita’s Most Playable Longshots on Sunday

DontLetTheGamePassYouByfortfus

>>Sunday April 10th| Go To TFUS PPs for today’s races at Santa Anita

Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around. >>See related interview on betting longshots.

Race 1:

Firelight:

8-1 on ML:

Earned a decent speed figure down the hill in her debut. Is bred for dirt, not grass, and this race has come off the hill. Has trained pretty well on dirt. However, it is a negative that Puype put her on the hill for her debut. So we would need price here.

Race 5:

Lucky Problem:

20-1 on ML:

Badly beaten at huge odds in his debut. Will be a giant price today. We think he ran slightly better than it looks on paper. Would not exclude from superfectas.

Angels Journey:

20-1 on ML:

First-time starter should be a giant price and has shown enough in the morning to merit inclusion in exotics.

Race 7:

Marriedtoaminister:

12-1 on ML:

Badly beaten in debut, but ran better than it looks. Second-out improvement could get this one involved today.

Race 8:

Cardiac:

20-1 on ML:

Blatantly overmatched but might be able to save all the ground near a soft pace, and if some of his opponents fail to handle the going, he might hang around for the super at a giant price.

Race 9:

Discatsonthesquare:

6-1 on ML:

Fires off layoffs and has been training well enough for her return. Has a versatile style.

Race 10:

Lamu:

20-1 on ML:

Has strong back figures on dirt (for other trainers) and has more speed than he showed last time.

Race 11:

Basie Boots:

15-1 on ML:

Eliminated at start in debut. Returned to train well. Can go better here.
