Aqueduct Friday Highlight Horse: A one-turn mile suits Sioux

This is one of the most interesting races on the card. While Bellamy Way (#4) is obviously the horse to beat off a series of successively more impressive performances against New York-breds, he is stepping up to face open company and moving off his beloved inner track. We’ll certainly use him, but we don’t think this is a one-horse race by any stretch.

Waymond Boyd (#3) is still somewhat of an enigma as he makes his second start in New York for Tom Morley. He appeared to surprise his rider last time, losing touch with the field early before making a strong late run through the stretch. That effort would suggest that stretching out in distance will help him, but he struggled in one-mile races out in California. He obviously has some ability, but he needs to show more speed to be a factor here.

Our top selection is SIOUX (#2).

Sioux makes his first start for Rudy Rodriguez, who gets a 96 trainer rating with horses he’s sending out for the first time. He lost all chance in the early stages of his race two back on December 19, and then got another weird trip going two turns at Laurel last time, dropping back midway through before coming on again. This horse has always done his best work when able to make the lead in one-turn races. There is not a ton of speed signed on for this race, so we’re hoping he gets the right kind of ride from Irad Ortiz. A fair price would be right around his 7/2 morning line odds.
