Though the Pace Projector is not necessarily predicting a fast pace, it does clearly illustrate that there are three runners in this six-horse field that should be vying for the lead.
Awesome News (#4) has had the lead at the top of the stretch in her last seven starts, so she figures to be intent on securing the lead. She fended off today’s rival Shotgun Love (#5) two back, but was soundly beaten by Stormy Sky when stepped up to this level last time. Awesome News has consistently run some of the fastest speed figures in the race, but holding off the closers after turning away early challenges is no easy task.
Rachel’s Temper (#3) is one that would certainly benefit from a contested pace up front. She stretched out successfully two back, but we feel that she’s better sprinting and is back in the right kind of spot here.
However, our top pick is a different late runner.
FLARING (#2) may have run the best race of all in that aforementioned race won by Stormy Sky. She overcame a three- to four-wide run around the far turn to finish a determined fourth at 47/1, just over a length behind Awesome News. She won’t be anywhere near that price here, but she should still offer value and appears to be moving in the right direction as she makes her third start off the layoff. We like the rider switch to Junior Alvarado and believe she can work out the ideal trip here.
