We’re not in love with the idea of betting back runners out of either allowance race that the two halves of the Mike Repole/Todd Pletcher entry are exiting. The winners of both of those races—Backwood Bay and Singsong—returned with subpar performances in their subsequent starts, and we just get the overall feeling that they were facing relatively weak groups of runners and will prove vulnerable to any capable new challengers.
Neither of the aforementioned Pletcher runners—Taken By Surprise (#1) and Surprise Cameo (#1A)—has taken significant steps forward since their maiden wins in the fall. Both also come in with questionable form around two turns. Here Comes Rosie (#3) finished up decently to just edge out Surprise Cameo in her first two-turn test, but a lack of pace in this race could work against her.
Fortunately, we spot at least one welcome new face in the form of recent maiden winner STORM CELL (#2).
This filly was part of an extremely live field in her debut, a race that saw the first five finishers all come back to win their next starts. Storm Cell tried two turns for the first time while racing over a sloppy, tiring track last time. She survived a pace that was relatively fast (color-coded in red), which contributed to her solid speed figure of 88. That number puts her right in line with the top contenders in here, and we believe Storm Cell, who is still a bit green, has room for further improvement.
