On The Contrary: Santa Anita’s Most Playable Longshots on Sunday

>>Sunday January 24th | Go To TFUS PPs for today’s races at Santa Anita

Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around.

Race 1:

Phantom Heat:

20-1 on ML:

It is hard to imagine this gelding ever winning a horse race, but on his good days he has enough of a late run to compete for the bottom of exotics, and his price is always huge.  Getting out of the gate with the field would help.

Race 2:

Olotta Shaken:

12-1 on ML:

Her running style does not work at this distance. However, she is pointed back at her top figure, and, amazingly, Pace Projector shows her ahead of most of these early. At a big price, that makes her a must-use for us in the trifecta.

Race 4:

It’s The Ice:

8-1 on ML:

The two ML favorites look very strong in here. It’s The Ice makes his US debut for a smart trainer and has been training very well. Could be best of the rest at a price.

Race 6:

Speed Check:

15-1 on ML:

Has trained better than he has run. Chance to make late run into trifecta at a price.

Race 7:

County Lineman:

8-1 on ML:

Whole barn has been firing. Gelding has back figures, handles the hill, and has fired off layoffs in the past.

Race 9:

L.A. Magic:

20-1 on ML:

Needs to pop gate from this awful post. Then needs the Miller horse near the outside to not show her route speed in this sprint. Then needs to fire her absolute best shot. If all this happens, she can get into the trifecta at a giant price.
