On The Contrary: Santa Anita’s Most Playable Longshots on Saturday

>>Saturday January 23rd | Go To TFUS PPs for today’s races at Santa Anita

Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around.

 Race 1:

Global Magician:

10-1 on ML:

Got out of his style last time—trying to close from way back. Today, pace projector shows him in second place early. Down a peg in class and draws a good post.

Race 5:

Where Y’at Joe Joe:

20-1 on ML:

Way down in class for this. Goes 3rd off the layoff today. Is capable of producing some early speed on occasion. Chance to wake up here and crash exotics at big price.

Race 6:

El Tovar:

8-1 on ML:

The crowd hates betting on this horse. So we’re expecting (nay, demanding) bigger odds than we see on the ML. Has fired off the layoff and his best efforts can get him into exotics.

12-1 on ML:

Cuts back for sharp trainer. Draws good post. Has interesting grass speed figures.

Race 7:

Avanti Bello:

5-1 on ML:

Draws right post and has right rider to get pocket trip in here. His best speed figures fit with these, and he has trained well since his last start.

Race 8:

Finest City:

10-1 on ML:

Training as if she is sitting on improvement. If the ML favorite rates, as advertised, there is a chance that Finest City can clear off against these. Has strong back figures.

Kiss At Midnight:

12-1 on ML:

Has very much the wrong style for this, but is better than she looks on paper and might be able to make late run for bottom of exotics.

Race 9:

Tribal Fighter:

10-1 on ML:

Firster has been training like a runner for smart trainer.
