On The Contrary: Santa Anita’s Most Playable Longshots on Sunday

>>Sunday January 17th | Go To TFUS PPs for today’s races at Santa Anita

Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around. >>See related interview on betting longshots.

Race 2:

6-1 on ML:

Pace Projector shows her on the early lead from inside post position. Forgive her recent non-effort and she fits with these on our speed figures for trainer who has been going well.

Race 3:

Warren’s Honey Bee:

8-1 on ML:

The best horses in this race seem obvious and will be short prices. Warren’s Honey Bee seems the most talented of the longer-priced horses. Has run exceedingly poorly on dirt but has trained very well on dirt of late. In light with good post and rider.

Race 4:

Wild Bella:

8-1 on ML:

Got out of her game last time, trying to come from way behind while very wide. Projects for up-close trip today and should go better.

8-1 on ML:

Handles grass just fine on her best, has competitive figures on her best, and can get a suck-along trip here if ridden a bit out of the gate.

Race 5:

Seattle Salt:

8-1 on ML:

Lacks talent but does have speed. Removes blinkers and may be able to hang around and make the trifecta.

Race 6:

15-1 on ML:

Pace Projector shows him surprisingly close to the early lead. Has some competitive speed figures and should be a huge price.

Race 7:

More Than Less:

12-1 on ML:

Never been anywhere near this far but has been training superbly for a smart trainer and comes in off a strong effort (speed figure 116).

Race 8:

Nine Point Nine:

6-1 on ML:

Pace Projector has her on the early lead on the cutback—often a strong angle. Training well, and repeat of figure from two back could get it done.

Race 9:

Proud ’n’ Ready:

8-1 on ML:

Tough trip in debut. Has grass breeding and draws perfect post for this.
