On The Contrary: Santa Anita’s Most Playable Longshots on Friday

>>Friday January 15th | Go To TFUS PPs for today’s races at Santa Anita

Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around. >>See related interview on betting longshots.

 Race 1:

6-1 on ML:

Up in class and overmatched on speed figures. Needs big improvement. But Pace Projector has her on the early lead, and she has solid route breeding for the stretch-out and is eligible to improve further and perhaps get into exotics at a price.

Race 2:

Not Too Shiny:

6-1 on ML:

Runs well on this hill. Has already won at this condition, hence the claiming tag in this optional claimer. Has competitive speed figures and figures for an outside stalking trip, which plays well down this quirky hill.

Race 4:

Vronsky’s Devka:

6-1 on ML:

Projects to be on clear early lead. Goes third off the layoff with figures pointing in the right direction. Handles the route, and has chance to hang around for trifecta share at a price.

Race 5:

6-1 on ML:

Projects to be on clear early lead. Ran OK in lone route try. Has semi-competitive speed figures with the weight off. Was badly overmatched last time. Chance to hang around late at a  price.

Race 6:

Seeking the Sherif:

7-2 on ML:

Huge trainer switch with this reclaim and training very well for this. Projects to be on lead in race favoring speed.

Race 7:

Precious Audrey:

6-1 on ML:

In light for second career start and first in D’Amato barn. Projects to be in the early lead, and has a legitimate chance here if handling this tricky course.

Race 8:

12-1 on ML:

Look past that last race and this gelding fits with these. Ran a 76 two back and has shown ability to stay in touch early.
