On The Contrary: Santa Anita’s Most Playable Longshots on Saturday

DontLetTheGamePassYouByfortfus

>>Saturday January 9th | Go To TFUS PPs for today’s races at Santa Anita

Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around. >>See related interview on betting longshots.

Race 3:

Sleepwalker:

15-1 on ML:

Put in a nice effort (speed figure 104) in a losing effort at Los Al. Returned to train pretty well and goes for trainer whose horses have been firing (usually in losing efforts) at this meet.

New Summit:

12-1 on ML:

Colt has a gate problem, but he’s back in a dirt sprint and training as if we will see his best today. And his best, combined with a decent break, is not bad.

Race 6:

Laoban:

15-1 on ML:

Pace Projector shows him on a clear early lead. Comes in off promising effort, with solid speed figure, in second place finish in Los Al MSW. Can run with these if going forward again in third start of career.

Race 7:

Just Kidding:

12-1 on ML:

Speed may allow him to get decent position early from lousy post. Has strong and improving speed figures, comes in off an excellent workout over the surface, and switches to Bejarano.

Race 9:

Condiment:

30-1 on ML:

Reaching a bit here, but we like this trainer switch and the workout that followed it, and anyway, this gelding has a hint of ability on his best days. Would benefit from projected fast pace.
