Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around. >>See related interview on betting longshots.
8-1 on ML:
Consistent mare goes for unpopular trainer, has rider who knows her well, has trained well enough since breaking her maiden, and has the right style to make a late run into the trifecta at a nice price.
6-1 on ML:
Pace Projector shows her just off the early lead in a race projected to favor speed. She has the fastest last-out speed figure in the field. She has handled this racetrack. Decent workout a week ago and Maldonado sticks with her.
8-1 on ML:
Has handled dirt well enough. Decent workout over the surface a week ago. Big rider switch here. Displayed a pleasing style in her old sprints.
I’m No Patsy:
Shortens up. Has several speed figures that fit in here. Has been competitive at and around this level. Is capable of going to the lead or stalking. Price should be huge.
