On The Contrary: Santa Anita’s Most Playable Longshots on Friday

>>Friday January 1st | Go To TFUS PPs for today’s races at Santa Anita

Note: The goal of “On The Contrary” is to point out several horses every day who may be overlooked in the wagering and who can possibly add value to trifectas and superfectas (in high holes and low) and to Pick 3s, Pick 4s, etc. We will not be making “selections” per se in “On the Contrary.” Rather, we’ll encourage readers to give extra consideration to certain horses who may seem a little overmatched at first glance–but who are in fact the type of horses we often build our bets around. >>See related interview on betting longshots.

Race 3:

Vodka Texted You:

8-1 on ML:

Showed some talent before the layoff (speed figure of 88 after trouble). Training very well off the layoff. Has the fastest Early Pace rating in the field. Blinkers off, and may prove capable of relaxing behind the Miller speedster if necessary.

Race 4:

Royal Banker:

12-1 on ML:

Better-suited to the hill than to 5F race at Del Mar. Down in class. Training well enough at SA. Has run well enough to suggest he can crack the trifecta if he fires.

Race 5:

Two Ten:

12-1 on ML:

Troubled, respectable debut for trainer who does not crank up firsters. Training very well off the brief break. Training regularly, too, which is not always the case with this competent-but-quirky barn. Draws perfect post and his trainer uses a rider of whom he is quite fond.

Race 6:

Tiz Pleasant:

12-1 on ML:

(This ML maker sure likes putting horses at 12-1.) We’re really reaching with this filly, who is up in class with a bounce pattern and a mediocre recent workout and a rider switch that sets off all sorts of alarms. That said, she should be a huge price, and there is a pretty good chance that she can crack the trifecta by merely repeating her last race.
