Tricky Zippy (#4) has done little wrong since a breakout performance at Belmont back in July, and her speed figures have continued to ascend in each start since then. She was a game second behind La Verdad in a tough edition of the Iroquois two back, and last time she stepped up to beat open company with a gritty performance. Her recent race ratings indicate that this race represents a drop in class. While we’re certainly not against her as the heavy favorite, we do think the value lies elsewhere in this race.
When she’s right, ISABELLE (#2) is every bit as good as Tricky Zippy.
Isabelle probably needed her return last time, when brought back in an unusually deep renewal of the Iroquois, and Junior Alvarado didn’t exactly punish her that day. We expect a much better performance now, second time back from the layoff. You know that the ability is there since last January she ran a 112 speed figure beating Blithely, who Tricky Zippy also had to work to handle last time. She then followed that up with an impressive win in the Broadway when overcoming a wide trip. If Bill Mott is able to get her back to the form she displayed over this surface last winter, she’ll give Tricky Zippy all that she can handle.
