Room for Me (#4) was installed as the morning line favorite as she looks to cap a strong 2015 campaign that saw her break out with a few gigantic speed figures. She also picked up a couple of graded stakes placings along the way, which earned her a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. While she is getting some needed class relief here, we get the feeling that she might be starting to head in the wrong direction at the end of a long season.
Princess Violet (#6) is the obvious alternative as she returns to Mike Hushion’s barn. There was no disgrace in losing to Wedding Toast twice this spring, and now she’s coming into this race fresh off a six-month layoff. This Grade 1-winning New York-bred filly was successful going this short early in her career, so we actually like the turnback. However, the price figures to be pretty short, since we suspect she’ll vie for favoritism with Room for Me.
Our top selection is CLASSIC POINT (#7).
This mare has had excuses in both of her starts since returning from the layoff. In the Gallant Bloom, she was overmatched facing the eventual first and second place finishers in the Breeders’ Cup, and it’s conceivable that she just needed the race. Then last time she didn’t get the right kind of trip when forced to stalk down inside. This Jimmy Jerkens trainee likes to be forwardly placed and out in the clear, and that is exactly the kind of trip that the Pace Projector is predicting she’ll work out. She’s fast enough to beat the aforementioned two runners on a good day, and we expect the real Classic Point to show up today.
WIN: CLASSIC POINT (#7)
TRIFECTA: CLASSIC POINT (#7) over Room for Me (#4) and Princess Violet (#6), using Nuffsaid Nuffsaid (#3) and La Madrina (#5) as backups underneath.
