We feel that morning line favorite Snag (#6) may be an underlay in this spot. This expensive half-brother to Intense Holiday ran well in his debut, but finds himself in a very competitive spot once again. He doesn’t own a major speed figure edge in this field but figures to go off as a solid favorite.
Of the second-time starters, the one we’re most interested in is Just the Zip (#5), who returns as a first-time gelding after breaking slowly and putting in a decent late run in a similarly slow-paced race. That day, he was running on late with fellow debut runner Vulcan’s Forge, who returned to put in a good third place effort ahead of Snag last time.
Chad Brown is always dangerous and his pair of first-time starters must be considered, but they find themselves in an unusually tough maiden race.
The morning line price of 7/2 would be quite the bargain on INSPECTOR LYNLEY (#1).
This horse ran extremely well in his debut. He was taken well back off a slow pace in a race that held together up front. Jose Ortiz was very patient coming off the far turn, but Inspector Lynley showed great acceleration once swung into the clear. He had to alter course a couple of times, but was really moving across the wire and galloped out ahead of the field. Shug McGaughey, who gets a trainer rating of just 51 with debut runners, gets a rating of 76 with horses making their second career starts.
WIN: INSPECTOR LYNLEY (#1)
EXACTA: Key INSPECTOR LYNLEY (#1) with Just the Zip (#5) and Snag (#6)
