2yo filly #8 Ask the Lonely makes her second career start today, following a layoff of 85 days. We like that she appeared forward enough to get started as early as she did (a rare thing these days). We also like the race she ran that day. Despite finishing 5th of 8, beaten over 8 lengths, she showed plenty of potential.
Away from the gate a couple of lengths behind the field, Ask the Lonely was outrun early. She then proceeded to put in a strong wide run through the turn to catch up to the field. She carried that run down to midstretch before flattening out, and she was tired at the end. To us, she showed plenty there to suggest that she can run a little, and the ultimate finishing position does little to indicate what was actually accomplished.
She makes her second start today for trainer Michelle Nevin, who gets a solid rating of 86 with second-time starters, and a rating of 97 with this kind of spacing between races. Ask the Lonely’s Breeding Rating of 85 for wet dirt suggests that she can handle the sloppy conditions at Belmont today, and she may prove to be value at anything like her 10/1 ML odds if she can build upon that deceptively good debut run.
