Sunday, April 27 – Santa Anita Top Play
Scheduled local post time 5:14pm
0 for 17 record and all, at morning line odds of 4-1, Cleverly Beverly looks like a solid play in this maiden claimer.
Cleverly Beverly’s trainer, Roger Stein, is a former harness trainer, and his horses often have the look of harness horses in the PPs: banging away week after week, seldom winning, seldom making big jumps. But Cleverly Beverly has quietly been grinding her way into the best form of her career, as her last two speed figures (75 and 73) attest.
In addition, she did not receive easy trips in those races. Quite the contrary, she received difficult trips. On April 6, she engaged early, while wide and against the flow of the race, and fought on with much gameness, her 0 for 17 record notwithstanding. And on April 13, in a route, she raced wide around the first turn, stalked a strong pace, and made a wide, pleasing middle move before being outrun.
Today she is back where she belongs–in a sprint. The Pace Projector shows her racing in fourth-place early (in a big field).
And her opposition, for the most part, is quite weak. Cleverly Beverly is our selection.
The horse who scares us most is West Coast Storm, whose debut, while flat on paper, looked rather decent visually. She has come back to train well and can step forward today.
Shared Image lacks a healthy pattern of speed figures, but she nosedives in class and figures to clear off early, which gives her a puncher’s chance in here.
Win bet on Cleverly Beverly.
Exactas: Cleverly Beverly both over and under West Coast Storm and Shared Image.
