Saturday April 26 – Aqueduct Top Play
Scheduled Local Post Time – 2:22 pm
Race 3 at Aqueduct is a rock-solid starter allowance sprint over 6.5 furlongs on dirt. The field of 8 runners has combined to post 48 victories, and it is led by ML favorite Groomedforvictory, the venerable nine-year-old NY-bred, who has won 12 times in his career, and starts for the hot David Jacobson barn.
We have no real argument with Groomedforvictory being considered the horse to beat, but we are at least a little skeptical of him, as well as of the next two shortest prices on the ML for this race, and for that reason we are going to try to get a better price home. Groomedforvictory has won two of his last three starts, and fell only a neck short in the defeat last out. However, his win two back came at the expense of three overmatched rivals (he was 1-5 that day), and he controlled a slow pace (not that he needed the assist). It is also reasonable to take the 103 speed figure assigned to that win with at least a small grain of salt, as it means that the runner-up that day, Kings Village, an eight-year-old with a 3-for-35 career mark, posted a new career top in that race.
Since we’re also not thrilled with the second and third choices on the ML, we’ll try to get the new and improved Dighton to beat them here.
Dighton is clearly a horse who has improved since he was claimed in January. He has posted a pair of wins, and three times has finished a game second to front-running winners.
His last race was his best yet, with a 103 speed figure, and Pace Projector, which indicates this race favors horses on/near the early lead, places him in a perfect inside stalking position early.
The Play: Win bet on Dighton
