Race Three
Scheduled local post time 1:29 pm local time

Screen Shot 2014-04-19 at 2.16.08 PMYahilwa has a lot going for her in this entry-level allowance route. According to the Pace Projector, she will get a ground-saving stalking trip, trailing only Melanistic at the opening half.

The speed figure of 103 that she has run in both of her last two starts is faster than any number any of her opponents has ever run. The Race Rating of 110 for her last two races is overwhelmingly higher than the Race Ratings for the races her opponents exit. She had difficult trips in all three of her races in this country. She has been training well for this race. She draws a great post. Joe Talamo rides. Yahilwa looks very strong in this spot.

The other horse who interests us in this race is Sagebrush Queen. Although she is no match for the top choice on speed figures, her last race, a sprint victory, was visually impressive in the extreme, and her pattern of pace figures in that race (82 79 90 93) bodes well for a horse stretching out. Yes, Sagebrush Queen ran poorly in both of her route attempts, but those races were on grass, a surface for which she is very poorly bred.

As is so often the case with horses trained by Jorge Gutierrez, when they look live, Rafael Bejarano is riding. A competent trainer who sports average stats, Gutierrez starts looking like Charlie Whittingham when Bejarano is up.  Gutierrez has a 63 rating overall, and a 97 rating when using Bejarano.

The play:

Win bet on Yahilwa

Exacta box: Yahilwa and Sagebrush Queen.
