A good year to be three?

The seemingly slow Louisiana Derby got us thinking about foal crop sizes contrasted with the continuing–or even growing–quest for Spring 3-yr-old success. So we ran a database query…

In 2009, just five years ago, through 3/29, 9,566 distinct 3-yr-olds had made at least one start for purses totaling $63,070,210 (three year old restricted). This works out to purses of $6,593.16 per 3-yr-old among starters.

In 2014 through 3/29, 6,511 distinct 3-yr-olds had made at least one start for purses totaling $59,891,670 (three year old restricted). This works out to purses of $9,198.54 per 3-yr-old among starters.

In more ways than one, times have changed.
