Race Four
Scheduled Local Post Time – 2:00 pm PT

The Eddie Logan (one mile on grass) has attracted a field of eight two-year-olds, three of whom are Europeans making their first start in the United States, and one of whom is a European making his second start in the United States.

The 2-1 favorite on the morning line, the Irish colt Craftsman, looks formidable indeed. He has improved in every start. He just ran a speed figure of 95 (best in the field) while winning a Group 3 in Ireland. The extended European comments in our past performances suggest that he has a mite of early foot. He’ll be receiving Lasix for the first time. He has a Pedigree Rating of 95 for turf routes. He goes for solid trainer Simon Callaghan. He has trained here in a manner that has filled the clockers with glee. He figures to be hard to beat today, and this will certainly be reflected on the toteboard. In fact, it might well be over-reflected. For that reason, we will go with Enterprising.

Although he didn’t earn a great speed figure (he ran an 86), Enterprising could hardly have been more impressive visually in his maiden victory. He raced wide around the first turn, settled, made an early advance on the backstretch, raced wide around the second turn, and took charge of the race in almost a playful manner. Since then, he has trained very well. We think there is a reasonably strong chance that he is prepared to improve his speed figure by quite a bit today, which is essentially a prerequisite for him to win this race.

We also believe that Enterprising is in line for a nice trip today. He will be breaking from post two, and, with the ever-astute Gary Stevens riding, he figures to be stalking Lucky Views and My Secret Affair from the inside.

Enterprising’s trainer, Thomas Proctor, has had a fine year and has Trainer Ratings of 92 in third start of career, 91 with spacing similar to today’s, and 100 (the maximum) when using Gary Stevens. Enterprising is our selection.

We will protect with a cold exacta under Craftsman.
