Monmouth, Race 11, 6:00 pm ET
The G3 Eatontown, Fillies and Mares, 1 and 1/16 miles, Turf
Dayatthespa has won six of her last seven starts, including the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup over the classy Centre Court. Her only defeat during that span came in the Matriarch, where she fought her jockey, jumped a shadow and propped. She is obviously the horse to beat in the Eatontown after her impressive four-year-old debut at Belmont Park early last month.
However, the value in the Eatontown looks sure to be Peace Preserver. She can pull off an upset if she can reproduce the form of her most recent grass race in the Beaugay, where she ran a dazzling 120 speed figure. It is admittedly fair to look at Peace Preserver’s giant figure from the Beaugay with skepticism: she earned extra credit for closing off a snail’s pace in that race, while her previous career-best figure was just a 107 at age three. Ruthenia, who was dead last at every stage in the Beaugay, was credited with a 104 speed figure, and her figure regressed to just a 97 next time out.
The fact that Peace Preserver was able to run a 101 speed figure on dirt in her most recent start is actually a very encouraging sign. As a two-year-old, she broke her maiden running a figure of 96 on turf for trainer John Parisella, only to regress significantly in her next two dirt starts. She should bounce back to her best with the return to grass today.
