Like Wednesday’s card after the rain scrapped the turf races, today’s card has a very frustrating early look to it for value seekers. There are a couple of very strong favorites. For example, it might require an act of God for Dayatthespa to get beat in the third race. And Souper Speedy (9/5 morning line) has something of that “certain as death and taxes” look to him in the sixth race.
Seventh Race (local post time 4:14pm ET):
Update (12:40) – Corlita is Scratched
Mavourneen (6/1 morning line) comes from a good turf family. Her mother, Rowdy, wasn’t successful at all in four dirt tries, but she made over $176,000 racing on the turf in her career. In her most recent start, Mavourneen made her turf debut, off a 268-day layoff, in a race that was assigned a TimeformUS race rating of 84. She was never a factor, but her speed figure of 65 is noteworthy because no one in today’s race has ever run a speed figure higher than 67. Now, after that much-needed tightener, Mavourneen drops sharply in competition into a race with a class rating of just 63. The hope is that Mavourneen steps forward, and if she does, she’s a strong contender against this group.
For exotic purposes, Coriander and Coralita are both must-uses. They have the best established form, as well as excellent trainers, and they both project for very good trips. Frankly, we’re not all that excited to oppose either one, but it’s the best opportunity that we see on this unpleasant-looking betting card.
Betting strategy: Exacta and Trifecta keying Mavourneen on top of Coriander and Coralita.
